Growing at home in Malaysia
Would you like to cook from ingredients you grow yourself? Have you tried to grow your own green veggies at home and failed? Have your plants ended up stunted, malnourished or dead?
Don’t be discouraged. Your experience is similar to that of the many urbanites who are keen to learn more about urban gardening and want to add more healthy and organic options to their diet.
When we first try to plant, we may get discouraged when the plants or herbs in our house, backyard or balcony fail to take off after we put in the seeds. You may encounter problems such as bugs and pests, diseases affecting the plant health, and overwatering.
There is hope. Its actually easy when you start with growing what grows!

First of we talk about the soil – or the lack of it.
Many people think the top soil is brown as if often sold in Malaysia. What we fail to see is that we are not in the temperate climate – and without realizing we follow videos of facebook or youtube of people in the temperate and want to grow just like them.
It does not work!
We do not have the same soil to begin with. So we need to fix that first.
The simplest mixture that everyone can start with is the follows:
- one part available soil (red or brown)
- one part compost (good reliable pure compost – not a mix)
- one part sand
