Many people want to grow edibles and not have too many problems with it. How can one do that in Malaysia?
Yes. It is possible. And it is easy.
Grow what Grows!
This is the critical thing for success.
If we stick to growing what grows easily in based on the local climate and tradition, then we are sure to succeed.
Due to the easy availability of video from around the world many people immediately want to start growing things from other climates:
- Tomatoes
- Potatoes
- Kale etc.
While these can grow in Malaysia specific varieties need to be selected and special arrangements made to suit the climate as much as possible. On top of that the plants also need additional care like pruning, protection from rain etc. so they do not get taken over by diseases that are not as prevalent in the colder climates.
So what do we start with?
Start with things which are easy to grow.
Look at the picture. We were given the Cassava (Ubi Kayu) Stems from a friend. This is slightly different variety than what we already had.
We literally threw the stems under the bush to be planted later since we know how hardy these plants are.
The plant has already started growing and has several branches coming up quite quickly.
Totally without any care.
We could already pluck out some of the leaves to cook them.
What else can you grow easily in Malaysia? Here is a list of items that are easy to grow:
- Sweet potato (Ubi Keledek)
- Malabar Spinach
- Tree Spinach (Pucuk Chaya)
- Moringa leaves
- Hummingbird vegetable (Daun Turi)
Not sure where to find these plants? Drop by to our Sunday Market in the mornings and get some fresh vegatables or even some supplies to start your own journey towards planting things that actually grow!
NOTE: Plants need good soil (not typical compressed / hardened soil). They also do need water so leave the plants in a place with rain or water them regularly.
